for many years 1956 boxes were installed into 1953-55 trucks to lower the steering wheel 1.5 inches.  Keep in mind you may have a 56 in a 53-55 also if you would like to lower your steering wheel just a little, order the 56, they are exactly the same except for the shaft which is 1.5" shorter.

1953-55..36 7/8", 1956..35 3/8", 1957-60..34 1/8"
